It turns out that "Peg Leg Joe",the "Old Man" in his song,had sailed the seas and had some serious celestial navigation skills that he put to very good use advising,in his song to the enslaved men he met,to "follow the drinking gourd"[The Big Dipper Constellation] to the North Star,which would guide them northward. His song was a road map of sorts giving them sign posts and markers[on trees] to successfully make their long,arduous year long path northward to the Ohio River,best crossed when it was frozen in Winter. The planation owners thought nothing about his song being sung repeatedly,since productivity remained high. It was only after this handy man carpenter left the camp did the owners realize that the workers were escaping."Peg Leg Joe" was a major conductor in the "Underground Railroad", enabling countless numbers of folks to pursue a better life.
