Interesting Song Fact:
This song can be used for stripping paint from most surfaces. Take appropriate safety measures.
This is probably the best synopation I’ve ever heard. Too bad we lost Jesse soooo young. You did leave behind some great sounds which help us remember you.RIP Jesse!

this kicks ass! I love me some taj mahal. Was lucky enough to have seen him twice ,once at the handy awards in Memphis and again at a one man show in bradenton florida. So dsmn gooooooood…….
Really grateful to you for posting this. Perfect stop and start song.
Jesse conducts a guitar school on these tracks, listen up and learn. Shamefully underrated he is.
PS: Slight change of personnel – see pekoe67 listing below – for Circus performance – Gary Gilmore on bass and Chuck Blackwell on drums, but they still lay down a real groovy, funky, rhythm line…. (and Taj and Gary played together only a couple years ago on Clapton and JJ Cale’s Grammy Award winning album Road to Escondido – great music never ages… If only Jesse Ed were still with us – he would stand amongst the great lead guitarists (he played on Concert for Bangladesh – lots of trivia!
Great to hear this recorded version. You can catch VIDEO of this track as well as Aint That a Lot of Love, Checking Up on my Baby and Corinna (all from first two albums) on Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus DVD – fantastic! But this recorded version has so much power (I believe they were worn out by the time they recorded the Circus stuff – still great to have some visuals – highly recommended!!!!!
TajMahal just released a new album “Masetro” I came looking for couts off it.I want to hear “Black Man Brown Man ” which is on it.The only other album I know that has that song was his ‘75 release called “Satifised And Tickled Too ” and I have never found this on a cd…great album…
I stumbled across this song about a month ago, the damn thing never gets old, its now one of my all time favorites!
I used to see Taj mahal and band play at “The Pond” at UMass campus in late 1960´s. This song is so truly bluesy-funky in the best sense of the words that it is classic of the genre, and well makes up for subsequent “less intense” material.
riiight on brother!
that drummer is tighter than a gnat’s ass on a rain barrel……
The Black Keys do a version of this. I thought that was the best until hearing this. I’m just blown away. Gotta love the Blues. DAMN!
Bobby Darin did a mean cover of this song.
Oh hell, I love it!
Here’s the lineup according to the liner notes: Jessie Edwin Davies, lead guitar;
Ryland P. Cooder,rhythm guitar;
James Thomas, bass; Sanford Konikoff, drums
Taj Mahal, harp
That’s how they (mis)spelled the lead guitarist’s name, I typed it just like it’s written.
Statesboro Blues, Checkin’ Up On My Baby,
Everybody’s Got To Change Sometime and EZ Rider all have the same personnel.
Ry also appears on mandolin on ‘The Celebrated Walking Blues, the album’s last cut.
